About Us

Te Puna Matarau | The Canterbury Screen Industry Association (TPM) was formed by Waitaha Canterbury-based screen practitioners who are passionate about growing the local industry. We formed post-COVID-19 in Ōtautahi Christchurch in response to an identified need for a central advocacy body within the Waitaha Canterbury region that could act as a watchdog for the interests of the local screen industry.

Our members work across the screen sector in film, television and content creation from a variety of creative, technical, and industry-adjacent backgrounds. This included Writers, Directors, Producers, Film Crew & Technicians, Post-Production, Actors, plus many more diverse roles in or related to screen. We are passionate about our local screen sector and are willing to speak up to support it.

The association’s key aims are to develop and nurture screen creativity and production in the Canterbury region with a focus on economic development, project ownership, and sustainable growth. Through advocacy and collaboration with local government and other screen bodies across Aotearoa, we also encourage and foster our local screen community and deliver industry-led initiatives.

Our Name

Our name was kindly gifted by Corbin Te Aika (Ngāi Tahu).

Ngā mihi ki te mana whenua o Ngāi Tahu.
Ka mihi ki te kaupapa o tēnei wā: Nā te rourou, nāu te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi.

We pay respects to the iwi of this land, Ngāi Tahu.
With our resources combined, our people will thrive.

Te Puna means ‘The Spring’.
Matarau means ‘to have many points’.

As many drops of water combine to form a spring, Te Puna Matarau brings many viewpoints and experiences from across the sector that come together to form a central source of knowledge, advocacy and strength to bring positive change to the region’s screen industry. Our logo visually represents this central spring as well as a camera shutter to honour our screen roots.
